Where do you enter the river? Here and now.
We are nature, and nature is us. That is Chinese Medicine 101. It’s what you learn on day one of Acupuncture School and it’s at the heart of all original healing systems. Separation is what’s gotten us into the environmental mess that we find ourselves in now. While in the midst of great human achievement and technological advancement, there are deep levels of disconnection from both the natural world and ourselves. The dramatic changes in the environment stem from our collective neglect, but they also mirror a more personal trend as a culture.
We have lost touch with our bodies’ connection to nature, the basic tenet of human health. To get our systems back online, we need the fundamentals: frequent Movement opportunities, real whole food Nutrition, and the most overlooked nutrient of all, proper Rest. These three elements are known in Chinese Medicine as the Three Free Therapies.
The Three Free Therapies work because the backdrop of nature around us reveals the same pattern of movement, nutrition, and rest. In fact the basic pulse of all living things reflects these three elements in a perfectly balanced ratio. The illusion of separation from nature makes it easier to avoid this essential truth, but we need to start noticing, connecting with, and loving ourselves and nature. This attunement will create better harmony in ourselves and expose the connective power of the natural world.
Another obvious, but powerful, way to begin healing this disconnect from nature is to harmonize and attune with the seasons. The seasons are a constant river of transformation flowing all the time. Where I’m from in the northern hemisphere, we have four distinct seasons, but wherever we are in the world, we’re subject to this flow of change. By paying attention to this flow we connect more deeply with nature’s cycles.
Starting next week, I’ll share simple and effective tools every week on the Three Free Therapies for bringing better Movement, seasonal whole food Nutrition, and deep Rest into your into your day-to-day in a seasonally-attuned way so that you can start tapping into the the healing power of nature more deeply.
I’m excited that you’re part of my community and look forward to growing together!
In good health,
